Most Ironman events have a strict time limit of 17h to complete the race. The track usually starts at 7:00 am, the mandatory time-out for the swim is 9:20 am, the mandatory time-out for cycling is 5:30 pm and the required cross-country time is midnight. Any participant who completes a triathlon in the above period becomes Ironman.
The name “Ironman Triathlon” was derived from the original Ironman triathlon, now called the Ironman World Championship. Held in Kullua-Kona, the worldwide championship has been held annually in Hawaii since 1978. Ironman World Championship is known for its lengthy struggles, extreme racing conditions and is broadcast live. on the big channels.
There are many other race tracks also organized at the same distance, similar to Ironman Triathlon but not manufactured, owned or licensed by World Triathlon Corporation. These include The Challenge Family of Challenge Roth or Norseman Triathlon.
The idea for the Ironman triathlon came from the O’ahu Perimeter Relay Awards in 1977. Among the participants were representatives of both Mid-Pacific runners and Waikiki Swimming Club, These members argue with each other what type of sport is better, the runner or the swimmer.
Due to the lack of media efforts after that, in 1979 about 50 athletes participated. However, due to bad weather, the race was delayed for a day. Only 15 people started the race the next morning. Collins plans to change the track into relay events next year to get more participants. But journalist Barry Mc Dermott of Sports Illustrated then discovered the track and wrote a 10-page article about it. The following year, hundreds of curious players contacted Collins.
A major change in the promotion of the track occurred in February 1982. Julie Moss, a college student participated to collect research for her physical physiology dissertation, and di Go to the first finish line. As she neared the finish line, severe fatigue and dehydration struck her, only a yard to the finish line. Although Kathleen Mc Cartney passed her to the finish line first, Moss tried to crawl to the finish line.
Her performance was broadcast live around the world and created an Ironman mantra that was completed was a success. By the end of the year, the track was up to 1,000 participants, with a lottery to choose from and eliminating the remaining 1,000 athletes.
